Sailboats on a Venetian Lagoon by Swedish Artist Knut Norman (1896 - 1977)
Oil on Board, Circa 1950. Held in its original frame. Signed lower right.
A vibrant and richly painted scene of angular buildings rising above the turquoise waters of a Venetian lagoon. Sailboats are moored and gondolas glide by, the artist has depicted the light, shadow and reflections of the narrow waterways in confident, wide brushstrokes. A beautiful bold picture that throws out colour and light in the post-impressionist style.
Knut Norman (1896-1977) a highly accomplished Swedish artist who was sponsored by Sweden's most famous artist; Anders Zorn, this enabled Norman to travel extensively in Europe, focussing on landscape and Southern European subjects, especially Venetian scenes. Knut Norman studied in Stockholm and Paris, his works are represented at Trelleborg Museum, Sweden.
The painting is in excellent vintage condition and the frame shows signs of age which adds to its charm.
