A Vintage original oil painting of a Southern Italian hillside town of white-washed houses, painted in 1951 by Swedish artist Sven Joann (1908-1985).

Light bounces off the white washed houses, vines stand in the foreground and tiered patchwork gardens stagger down the hillside. The warmth of Southern Italy and its hazy light favoured by artists has been captured by Joann in short confident brush strokes of impasto in the Impressionist style.

Joann studied at Wilhelmson's School of Painting between 1925 and 1928, under artists Wilhelm Smith and Albert Engström at the Kungliga Konsthögskolan (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) from 1929 to 1930, and then with Otte Sköld in 1931. Between the years 1932 and 1953 he made several study trips to Germany, Italy, France and Denmark where he stayed in each country for several months at a time.

Joann exhibited regularly throughout his career and is represented in public collections in Sweden including works held at the Västerås Art Gallery, Jönköping County Museum, Småland Museum in Växjö and at the Art Academy in Stockholm.
